Biography

Nicholas Gamberini was born in 1991, in a very characteristic medieval center near Ferrara, placed in Emilia Romagna. He is passionate about the world of violin making since his childhood, enjoying the unique privilege of having an incomparable master, a violinist grandfather. Thanks to his experience and knowledge, Nicholas approaches the vocation to became a violin maker. He undertakes a self-taught career until the graduation in Product Design at the University of Ferrara, when he decides to become a violin maker. He attended the Bologna School, where he studied and realized mainly models of the 900s, under the guidance of Marcello Bellei master. After that, he decided to move to the violin city par excellence: Cremona. Here, he concluded his learning process at the Academia Cremonensis, perfecting the constructive technique of the closed-end internal form, thanks to the support of Giovanni Colonna master. His instruments are entirely hand crafted, without any electronic support, remaining faithful to the Cremonese's secular form and tradition, constantly seeking the harmony between structure and sound. This is certainly the main reason for the production of few pieces per year, that guarantees to each instrument prestige and uniqueness. Considerably linked to the philosophy of the closed-end internal form method, he sees the unique opportunity to teach at the Academia, where he still transmits his passion to people that came from all over the word.

Nicholas is creating a network among various laboratories to continually improve the quality of instruments. One of the longest collaborations took place in 2019 at the Nippon Violin laboratory, where he had the opportunity to study directly all the instruments of the ancient violin makers, including Stradivari, Guarneri, and Amati.

Having the chance to closely examine such prestigious instruments, crafted by renowned luthiers of the past like Stradivari, Guarneri, and Amati, Nicholas has the opportunity to deepen his knowledge in the field of violin making and incorporate it into his own instruments.

The instruments created by these luthiers are considered among the finest in the world, renowned for their sound quality and the craftsmanship employed in their creation. Through the direct study of these instruments, Nicholas can appreciate their unique characteristics, analyze the construction techniques used, and gain a greater understanding of the creative process of those master luthiers.
